Carbon Calculator for Movie Production 1.0
This enables calculation of GHG emissions reduction volume in movie production, promoting the shift to new production methods and virtual production.
Dentsu Group Inc. and Metaverse Production (*1) jointly developed Carbon Calculator, the first such undertaking in the movie production industry (For release within 2022).
In the U.K., Ad Net Zero initiatives (aiming to realize virtual net zero for GHG emissions) commenced, led by three major advertising organizations. They developed a calculator as a tool to clarify carbon footprint, etc. and proceedings are underway to make its use mandatory.
Addressing this issue for the first time for Japan’s movie production industry , Carbon Calculator for Movie Production was developed through a joint project named Metaverse Production, comprised of Dentsu Group Inc. and four other companies: Dentsu Creative X, dentsu creative cube, TOHOKUSHINSHA, and Hibino. Carbon Calculator for Movie Production enables the calculation of GHG emissions reduction volume in movie production and promotes the shift to new production methods and virtual production. It is aimed for regular use in the industry and for promoting standardization from the next fiscal year. The functions of Carbon Calculator for Movie Production 1.0 are shown below.
Automatic calculation of GHG emissions:
This enables inventorying of the factors that cause GHG emissions for each phase in the production workflow, i.e., planning, production preparations – shooting, and post-production – finishing. Enter numerical values of emissions factors into a simple Excel interface to visualize GHG emissions in the video production content.
Emissions reduction methods are recommended and reduction effects are expressed digitally:
Reduction methods to be considered in each phase of the production workflow are recommended, reductions are realized by exiting from mass-consumption style production (as advocated in the Metaverse Production project), and efficiency improvements by technology will be digitized objectively.
*1: A joint project with four other companies: Dentsu Creative X, dentsu creative cube, TOHOKUSHINSHA, and Hibino. Initiated in December 2021, it aims to realize GHG reductions and increased process efficiency in movie production. It provides ‘studio PX’ (a studio equipped with a permanent large-sized LED display) and ‘PX service’ (based on 3D CG assets for fully-customizable use) using the latest movie production method, virtual production.
